ABOUT THE HOME SLEEP TEST
A Sleep Test is recommended when a physician suspects that you are at risk for Sleep Apnea
Traditionally sleep disorders have been diagnosed in an overnight facility and which is attended by a sleep technician. If the sleep test shows that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the problem, a second test (CPAP titration) is performed to determine the pressure required for treatment. Overnight facility based sleep testing while necessary for certain types of sleep disorders, is inconvenient, expensive, takes time away from work and is performed in an unfamiliar environment which can affect the results of the test. There are sleep disorders other than OSA which may require a facility based attended sleep test.
In-Lab sleep testing and CPAP treatment programs can cost several thousands of dollars. The Home Sleep Test (HST) can be completed at a fraction of this cost and the sleep medicine industry and many insurance plans continue to move in this direction. The portable or home sleep test (HST) is done in the comfort of your normal sleeping location (home, cab or hotel) at a fraction of the cost of facility based sleep testing, is easier to schedule, and does not interfere with job or other daily activities. In many cases patients at high risk for OSA that undergo a home sleep test can proceed directly to an initial trial of Auto-CPAP (APAP) therapy without having to have a second sleep test. However there will be a few situations when a patient tested for OSA using a HST is required to undergo additional facility based sleep testing which results in additional time and cost.
